If you want a focused place to discuss sensitive information such as budgets, resourcing, strategic positioning, and so on, create a private channel for your team.

How to add users to a private channel

Follow these steps to add a user to a private channel:

  1. Open the team where your private channel is located.
  2. Go to the private channel then click More options (…) > Add members. Note that the private channel has lock icon.
  3. Type the name of the user that you wish to add then click Add.

Cannot add user on a private channel

It is not possible to add people directly in a private channel without them being part of the general channel.

To add users in a private channel, make sure that they’re added to the main team first.

Here’s how to see the members in the main team:

  1. Click More options (…) > Manage team.
  2. Check Members and guests by clicking the dropdown button.

If the user’s name is not listed, manually add the user to the team.

This is the solution if you can’t add anyone to a private channel in Microsoft Teams
